Stetson Summer Civics Education Program Inspires High School Students to Consider a Career in Law

Tampa attorney Assita Toure was invited to speak with high school students from throughout Pinellas County interested in a career in law on Friday, July 22 at the downtown St. Petersburg courthouse. The event was coordinated by Christine E. Cerniglia, an associate professor and the Director of Experiential Education at Stetson College of Law, and was part of a summer civics education program.

Also speaking were Forest Sutton, an assistant state attorney from the 12th Judicial Circuit, which comprises Manatee, Sarasota and DeSoto counties; Keongela Norton, an assistant public defender in the Sixth Judicial Circuit, which comprises Pinellas and Pasco counties; and Pinellas-Pasco Judge Steve Berlin. The three attorneys discussed their jobs and the challenges they face. In addition to discussing his background, Judge Berlin provided a primer on the three branches of government and how laws are created.
