Bankruptcy and commercial litigation attorney Scott Williams shared insights in an article for the Birmingham Business Journal’s Guest Notebook on November 19, 2025. He discussed turbulent times in the automotive and medical industries and how recent bankruptcies and funding cuts have added to the uncertainty facing both communities.

He shared that the Birmingham has a long history of adapting to change. Once known as the “Pittsburgh of the South” for its steel production, the city eventually shifted toward biomedical and automotive growth.

Today, both industries play a major role in the local economy, especially with more than 82,000 people working in bioscience and the University of Alabama at Birmingham driving much of the area’s momentum. Even with this strength, hospitals and healthcare providers are feeling real financial pressure, from federal budget cuts to the rising number of facilities at risk of closing.

The automotive sector is also feeling the strain. Alabama remains a major player in vehicle manufacturing, but uncertainty around tariffs, slowing consumer demand and several recent bankruptcies in related companies are creating challenges. With auto loans becoming riskier and repossessions rising, the ripple effects are hitting both businesses and consumers.

Williams notes that both industries may face more consolidation and tough decisions in the years ahead, making strong leadership and thoughtful planning essential as Birmingham prepares for what comes next.

“The future is uncertain for the medical and automotive communities. But on the other side of any
storm, the rain stops, and the work begins again to renew and grow. The present realities of an
uncertain future are best met with leadership and preparation rather than ignoring the oncoming
storm.”
