Learning, Connecting and Growing

Week 7

This week makes the list as one of my favorite weeks of the summer so far. It kicked off on a strong note with an Opening and Closing seminar led by Rob Blank. The session was incredibly helpful, providing practical advice and thoughtful insights on how to effectively structure and deliver both the opening and closing of a trial.

We had a great time celebrating the our hard work for the Opening Statements and Closing Arguments Workshop at Columbia!

Throughout the week, I continued working on several assignments. One of the most engaging assignments I worked on involved a plaintiff’s motion for a new trial, which a partner asked me to review in preparation for an upcoming hearing. I briefed all of the cited cases, researched potential counterarguments and contrary authority, and assessed whether the case law was applicable to the facts at hand. I really enjoyed having the opportunity to support the attorney’s strategy firsthand and engage in thoughtful discussions on different aspects of the case, which helped me gain real-world insight.

Tuesday night brought one of the most memorable meals of the summer: dinner at Rocca! We enjoyed an incredible family-style dinner prepared by Blake Bonsack’s brother, the chef and owner. Blake knew exactly what to order, and every dish was absolutely delicious. It was another great opportunity to connect with the attorneys in a relaxed and fun setting.

By midweek, all the other summer associates arrived in Tampa to participate in the Opening and Closing Workshop we had been preparing for all week. Rob Blank and I walked from the Tampa office to the Hillsborough County Courthouse, following his lucky route that he has been taking since his first year as an associate. Given that we are both a little superstitious, I’d like to believe that walk made my performance even better!

The workshop took place in the ceremonial courtroom, where several attorneys from the office attended to observe and provide feedback. Chief Judge Chris Sabella even stopped by to introduce himself and stayed to watch my closing argument! Although I was nervous at first, once I got started, I had a lot of fun with it. The feedback I received was extremely valuable, and I’m excited to apply it as I prepare for our end-of-summer mock trial.

After the workshop, we headed to the iconic Columbia Restaurant for a well-earned lunch. We were joined by even more attorneys from the office, and we all had a great time. It was the perfect way to wrap up the day.

All in all, this week was a great mix of learning, connecting, and growing. Here’s to making the most of my last few weeks!
