Week 8 of the Summer Associate Program is officially in the books—and, again, I can’t believe how fast time is flying!
We kicked off the week with a seminar on direct and cross examinations, led by partners Scott Sarason and Suzanne Singer. Their presentation was super helpful, not just for next week’s workshop, but also in preparation for the end of summer mock trial. Later that same day, I attended an Associate College lunch presentation on witness preparation, presented by Rebecca Beers and Fred Clarke. It’s always encouraging to see that the firm invests in ongoing learning—not just for summer associates, but for all attorneys at every level.
Tuesday was a full (and fun) day. In the morning, I attended a mediation alongside Renee Duffy and Madison Miller. This was the first mediation I’ve seen this summer where the case settled! With each one I attend, I find myself becoming more comfortable and confident in following the process. That afternoon brought another highlight: I got to see my own case briefs and research come to life in court! Rob Blank argued against a Plaintiff’s motion for a new trial, and not only did he win, and the motion was denied, but he used one of the cases I found during my research. Seeing that play out in real time, in front of the judge and opposing counsel, was exciting and it was extremely rewarding to see my research actually being helpful. (Also, Rob was very impressive – like he’s been doing this for years!) 😉
Throughout the week, I continued juggling multiple assignments. One particularly memorable project was researching for founding partner Dick Caldwell to compile case law for his upcoming presentation on punitive damages. He even shared a previous article he wrote to help get me up to speed. I’m excited to keep digging into this topic and support his presentation preparation further.
On Thursday, I had the opportunity to accompany Mike Forte to an evidentiary hearing at the Hillsborough County Courthouse. Being in the courtroom and observing everything in person, as well as meeting the other attorneys that were present, was such a valuable learning experience. There’s so much nuance you just don’t get in law school! When we returned, it was time for the Annual Multicultural Luncheon. It was not only delicious, but also a great opportunity to enjoy a meal with the entire office in the big conference room. The office staff went all out with decorations, music, and, without a doubt, plenty of food. It was a fantastic event that clearly took a lot of time and effort to put together, and it was truly appreciated.
Shortly after, we headed to a happy hour organized by Jessica Romanies and Meredith Fee. I really value how welcoming and supportive they are, to both the office and to me as a summer associate. The sense of camaraderie and positive culture in the Tampa office is unmatched.
I wrapped up the week with a few more assignments and transitioned into mock trial mode with a Friday afternoon strategy meeting.
Week 9, here I come!
