Full Speed Ahead: A Week of Memorable Experiences as We Race Toward the Finish Line

Week 8

As the summer starts to wind down, the pace at RumbergerKirk has only picked up! This week was packed with memorable experiences both inside and outside the office.

A highlight of the OCBA Young Lawyers Law Clerks Reception was meeting Judge LaShawnda Jackson.

We kicked off the week with an associate BBQ at Meghan and Graham’s house, where we were introduced to their adorable dog, Beau. It was such a fun and relaxed way to spend time with attorneys outside the office and get to know everyone a little better. On Monday, we hit the ground running with a deposition with Partner Dan Gerber, where we also participated in witness preparation. Being involved in both the prep and the deposition itself provided a full picture of how attorneys strategically guide clients through the process, and I learned so much by observing Dan’s sharp, confident style in action.

Tuesday brought one of the most unforgettable events of the summer: an associate outing at Andretti’s! We raced professional go-karts (I proudly took third place), played laser tag, and hit the arcade. Putting a room full of attorneys into high-stakes competitive gaming environments may not be the wisest idea, but it was definitely one of the most entertaining.

Another event I’d been looking forward to all summer was the Annual Multicultural Luncheon, and it did not disappoint. I had read about it in a previous summer associate’s blog, and it exceeded every expectation. We had food from all over the world and spent the afternoon trying to guess the flags hanging around the room (with varying levels of success).

This week also included a special outing to the Orange County Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division Law Clerks Reception. Managing Partner Frank Sheppard and Partner Jennifer Thomas invited us to attend with them. It was such a great opportunity to connect with young attorneys from across the area. One of the highlights was meeting Judge LaShawnda Jackson, a former RumbergerKirk partner who began her career as a summer associate. She took the time to share invaluable tips and encouragement for our upcoming mock trial.

As we head into the final stretch, I’ve been deep in motion drafting, research projects, and preparing for next week’s mock trial. It’s hard to believe how quickly the summer is flying by, but I’m excited to take everything I’ve learned into the last couple of weeks!

P.S. In a surprising twist, my orchid, Doomed, is actually thriving! In an even bigger plot twist, I was entrusted with watering Hannah Clark’s plants. A bold move, considering she personally witnessed my orchid’s near-death experience. This is my plant redemption arc.
