Motions, Motions and More Motions

Week 5

I can’t believe we are over halfway done with the summer!

Heading to happy hour!

As the days pass, time seems to go by faster as assignments, workshops, and events fill my calendar. But I am making sure to enjoy every minute of it.

This week I worked on motions nonstop. From Motions in Limine for slip and falls and breach of contracts to Motions to Exclude Experts for trade secrets cases, I have been immersed in learning the difference between motions and how to craft the best, most compelling argument for my client.

On Tuesday, Partner Dan Gerber presented a Motion Practice seminar for the summer associates, which went into detail on how to present our written motions in court. Next week we will have to present our writing competition motions as if in court. Since the Deposition Workshop, I have truly appreciated the opportunities Rumberger gives the summer associates to sample not only research and motion drafting, but also oral advocacy. It’s clear that Rumberger intentionally planned this summer to be a taste of what it looks like to be a trial attorney, from research and drafting to taking depositions, presenting motions, and going to trial.

On Wednesday, Partner Patrick Delaney and I went to lunch at Bento! It was a great opportunity to get to know him a little bit better and hear about his career trajectory in criminal law and time in Tallahassee before coming to Rumberger! After lunch, Sam and I had the opportunity to attend a vehicle inspection with Brent Hartman. It was so interesting to see the experts at work taking 3D scans of the truck and even flying a drone to take aerial photos.

Friday was a whirlwind! Sam and I spent the entire day collaborating on a Daubert motion due end of day. Throughout the drafting and editing process, we noticed how the writing competition prepared us for this feat! After the writing competition and the Daubert research and motions we have worked on, we feel ready to take on any experts. Even though the assignment was difficult and required our joint effort to complete it by the end of the day, it was great to collaborate with Sam. We really work great together!

Once that Daubert motion was submitted, we headed out with the associates to Mathers for the monthly associate outing. Despite the torrential rain and my umbrella flipping inside out at least twice, it was a fun adventure and I had a great time getting to know the associates better.
