There is No Better Way to Learn

Week 4

It is so gratifying to see how much progress I have made after working as a law clerk for just four weeks.  This past week brought with it a range of new experiences that pushed me to think more critically, work more independently, and step further into the role of an advocate.

Can’t believe it’s been four weeks already!

Up until now, my assignments were largely focused on research and shorter writing tasks. This week, however, I was given the chance to take on entirely new types of assignments. Attorneys are starting to trust me with more substantive writing projects, and I’ve noticed how these opportunities are helping me refine my voice and develop a clearer sense of my own style. It’s one thing to read motions and briefs in class or during externships, but it’s entirely different to be the person drafting those documents in a real-world setting. I’m learning how to take the law and shape it into something persuasive, practical, and tailored to each case.

Last Friday was also the deadline for the Summer Associate Writing Competition. This was a daunting task since we were not allowed to rely on the attorneys for assistance and feedback. The work was entirely our own, and that was both nerve-racking and fulfilling. While I am sure that my final product was nowhere near perfect, I am excited to see what I can improve. It has taken me a long time to be comfortable with making mistakes, but I have come to understand that there is no better way to learn. One of the things I appreciate about this program is the opportunity to take risks and maybe even get things wrong. It’s reassuring to know that I can work through the learning curve now, so that when it really counts, I’m ready to get it right.

Perhaps the most fulfilling part of this past week has been recognizing a shift in how I approach my work. I’m beginning to trust myself more. I’m starting to feel like I belong in this space. The process of growing into that confidence has been gradual but very real.

As much as I’ve learned so far, I know there’s still a lot ahead. That’s the most exciting part. Reflecting on my growth so far has been meaningful, but I’m even more eager to see what the next few weeks bring. There’s more to learn, more to write, and more room to grow—and I can’t wait.
