Former Regions Deputy General Counsel Joins RumbergerKirk Birmingham Office

Birmingham, AL – RumbergerKirk is pleased to announce the addition of highly experienced attorney, Bert Spence, to the firm’s commercial litigation team.  Armed with a wide range of knowledge gained during two decades of complex litigation, Spence will serve RumbergerKirk’s clients as of counsel in the firm’s Birmingham office.  

Prior to joining RumbergerKirk, Spence served as the chief litigation counsel in the legal department of one of the top 10 banks in the U.S, Regions Financial Corporation.  He has an extensive appellate practice and has rendered numerous decisions as an arbitrator in consumer, commercial and construction cases.  In addition, he has authored and advocated for passage many pieces of legislation in the tort reform/civil justice and healthcare arenas.  He has almost 20 years of litigation experience, specializing in the areas of commercial/banking, product liability/warranty, drug/medical device, personal injury defense, and insurance coverage.

“Bert has a very strong background in the financial industry as well as the pharmaceutical/medical device and insurance industries,” said Managing Partner Frank Sheppard.  “His areas of practice really compliment our existing and growing commercial practice.”

Spence also has a strong background in writing and has seen his articles featured in a variety of publications including The Alabama Lawyer, Alabama Law Review, Cumberland Law Review Journal of Counseling & Development, and Viewpoint, the Alabama Mental Health Counselors Association’s newsletter.

A member of numerous professional organizations, Spence currently sits on the Supreme Court of Alabama Standing Committee on Rules of Appellate Procedure, and is part of the Federalist Society’s Steering Committee for the Birmingham Lawyers’ Chapter.

Spence earned his J.D. from the University of Alabama School of Law and a B.A. from Jacksonville State University.
