Leonard Dietzen Discusses AI Governance at FSFOA Summer Conference
Artificial intelligence is already transforming how school districts operate, teach, and make decisions. The challenge for school boards is not whether AI will be used, but how to govern it responsibly.
At the Florida School Finance Officers Association (FSFOA) 2026 Summer Conference, RumbergerKirk partner Leonard Dietzen presented, “The Future Is Now: What School Boards Must Do to Get AI Right,” a session focused on the policies, leadership structures, and safeguards districts need to successfully implement artificial intelligence.
Designed for school finance leaders and district decision-makers, the presentation explored how school boards can take a proactive approach to AI governance through policy development, cross-functional leadership, procurement oversight, employee training, and data privacy protections. Leonard discussed the rapid adoption of AI tools across education and emphasized that artificial intelligence represents a permanent shift in educational operations rather than a passing trend.
A key focus of the presentation was the importance of districtwide collaboration. Leonard outlined the role of an AI task force that includes representatives from finance, procurement, curriculum and instruction, information technology, human resources, facilities, transportation, legal counsel, teachers, parents, and students. He explained how these groups can work together to evaluate AI tools, establish responsible-use policies, create implementation roadmaps, and adapt governance frameworks as technology continues to evolve.
The session also addressed the legal, operational, and financial considerations associated with AI adoption. Leonard encouraged districts to carefully evaluate privacy and bias risks, understand how data may be used by AI platforms and implement safeguards for protected information. He also discussed how pilot programs, workforce training and ongoing evaluation can help districts maximize efficiencies while supporting long-term educational goals.
The FSFOA 2026 Summer Conference brings together school finance professionals from across Florida to discuss emerging issues, share best practices and explore strategies that support effective school district operations.
