Putting Lessons into Practice

Week 7

Week 7 was another exciting and rewarding chapter of my summer associate experience.

The week began with a motion practice seminar led by Dan Gerber, who shared valuable insight into presenting different types of motions during hearings. His practical advice—from understanding each judge’s individual procedures to anticipating questions and arriving fully prepared—provided a helpful framework that I was able to apply later in the week.

After the seminar, I had lunch with Steve Klein and Chase Hattaway. In addition to introducing me to one of the best taco spots in downtown Orlando, they shared thoughtful advice about our upcoming mock trial and reflected on what they enjoy most about practicing at RumbergerKirk. Their enthusiasm reinforced the strong sense of community and collaboration that defines the firm’s culture.

On Wednesday, the Orlando office hosted a multicultural food festival, where colleagues shared dishes representing their cultures and backgrounds. It was a great opportunity to connect with everyone in the office, experience new traditions and celebrate the diversity that makes our team so unique. Thursday brought another memorable experience when I attended a hearing with Matt Smith. As a fellow graduate of my law school, Matt offered valuable advice on making the most of my final year and preparing for the transition into practice. Because we arrived early, I also had the opportunity to meet the judge, who was incredibly welcoming and encouraging. It was a conversation I’ll remember throughout my legal career.

On Friday, I argued a mock hearing based on the motion we submitted the previous week and received valuable feedback on my performance. Applying the techniques from the motion practice seminar made a noticeable difference in my confidence, organization and delivery. Seeing that preparation translate into stronger advocacy was incredibly rewarding.

I wrapped up the week by attending a deposition with Dan Gerber, where I had the opportunity to watch him put many of the same principles he discussed during the seminar into practice. His thoughtful questioning and command of the case reinforced how preparation and experience come together in effective advocacy.

Every week continues to build on the last, and each seminar, hearing, deposition and mentoring opportunity brings me one step closer to becoming the attorney I hope to be.
