A Front-Row Seat to Litigation

Week 2

I had an action-packed second week at RumbergerKirk.

This week, I attended two hearings, three depositions and, most excitingly, a trial. I was thrilled to observe my first trial and see firsthand how everything comes together in the courtroom. We spent the day observing a family law trial in state court, and it was fascinating to watch.

As soon as the trial began, everything moved quickly. I enjoyed seeing how attorneys laid the foundation for their questioning, introduced exhibits, and responded to objections. Watching those skills in practice was especially valuable as I look ahead to the mock trial competition later this summer.

On Wednesday, the summer associates attended a deposition workshop led by Joe Metzger. We learned how to craft effective deposition outlines, when and how to make objections, and strategies for conducting productive depositions. It was a great opportunity to learn from an experienced litigator and prepare for upcoming workshops where we will have the chance to put those skills into practice.

Thursday evening, we headed to the Cactus Club for dinner with several attorneys. It was a great opportunity to get to know everyone outside of the office while enjoying some excellent food. One of the things I have enjoyed most this summer has been building relationships with attorneys and learning from their experiences.

I also had the opportunity to contribute to several interesting assignments this week. For Isadora Sadler, I drafted a motion to compel discovery and a motion to show cause. I also assisted Jessica Kerbel with preparing a deposition outline for a Friday deposition. The assignment provided great experience and reinforced many of the concepts we discussed during the deposition workshop.

Overall, the week was filled with opportunities to observe skilled attorneys in action while continuing to develop my own legal writing and litigation skills. Between attending hearings, depositions, and a trial, as well as working on motions and deposition preparation, I gained valuable experience and learned a great deal. I am looking forward to seeing what next week brings.
