Stepping Up to the Podium

Week 5

I started the week working on a research assignment for my mentor, Katherine Becerra, involving a federal contract law issue. I also conducted follow-up research for Suzanne Singer on how recently passed legislation may affect our clients.

One aspect of these assignments that I have especially appreciated is the opportunity to meet with the assigning attorney after completing my research. Discussing my findings, answering questions about my analysis, and talking through how the law applies to a client’s situation has made each assignment more meaningful while helping me become more confident communicating legal arguments.

On Tuesday, the summer associates attended an opening and closing statement seminar led by Rob Blank from the Tampa office. Rob explained the key differences between opening statements and closing arguments and shared practical techniques for presenting each effectively. At the end of the seminar, we received our assignments for Friday’s workshop. I was selected to deliver the plaintiff’s closing argument in a premises liability case. It was my first mock trial experience and my first time representing a plaintiff, making it an exciting opportunity to step outside my comfort zone.

After preparing my argument throughout the week, Cory and I traveled to Tampa on Thursday evening. On Friday morning, we headed to the Hillsborough County Courthouse, where I presented my closing argument before attorneys from the Tampa office, who served as the jury.

During my presentation, I incorporated techniques I had observed while watching trials earlier this summer, including using exhibits, developing a clear theme, and anticipating the defense’s arguments. The most valuable part of the experience came afterward during the feedback session. Each attorney provided thoughtful comments on my presentation, highlighting both my strengths and areas where I can continue to improve.

Although I know there is still plenty to refine before the mock trial later this summer, I left the workshop encouraged by the experience and grateful for the opportunity to learn from such accomplished trial attorneys. Their feedback strengthened my confidence as an advocate and gave me practical skills that I look forward to applying throughout the rest of the Summer Associate Program.
