This week gave me the opportunity to take on new challenges and gain valuable courtroom experience.
I began the week researching an evidentiary issue in an asbestos case after Mike Holt asked me to analyze whether certain documents would be admissible at trial. It was rewarding to apply what I learned in Evidence—particularly the hearsay rule and its exceptions—to a real case. Seeing those concepts come to life in practice reinforced how important evidentiary decisions are to trial strategy.
On Tuesday, I attended the deposition of an expert witness in another asbestos case. One of the highlights of the week was observing Mike Holt’s deposition style. He built rapport with the witness while asking strategic questions that could later support a Daubert motion or serve as impeachment material at trial. It was a great opportunity to see how experienced litigators approach depositions with future motions and trial strategy in mind.
Later in the week, Mike gave me the opportunity to draft a dispositive motion. I enjoyed researching and writing the motion, and it was rewarding to see it filed with only minor revisions. I also attended the hearing on the motion, where I observed how the judge responded to arguments I helped develop. Watching the written work translate into oral advocacy provided valuable insight into the litigation process.
Outside the office, the Miami summer associates attended a cooking class at Sur La Table. I partnered with Crystal Valencia to prepare lobster ravioli, an arugula salad with pistachio balsamic dressing and limoncello sorbet. It was a fun opportunity to unwind, connect with colleagues and learn a few new cooking techniques. The sorbet was definitely the highlight of the meal!
On Thursday, I presented two premises liability cases during the firm’s weekly attorney brunch. Although the cases involved legal issues I hadn’t previously encountered, the presentation gave me another opportunity to strengthen my communication skills and explain complex legal concepts clearly.
I wrapped up the week by arguing my Daubert motion during the Motion Argument Workshop. After refining my arguments and practicing my delivery, I felt confident presenting my position and responding to the judge’s questions. The feedback I received on my advocacy style made the experience valuable.
Overall, this week reinforced how legal research, writing, oral advocacy and mentorship all work together to build successful litigators.
