As I wrapped up week eight at RumbergerKirk, I couldn’t believe how quickly the summer has flown by. This week I continued preparing for our upcoming mock trial.
One of the highlights of the week was attending a direct and cross-examination seminar led by Scott Sarason. It was a valuable chance to learn from an experienced trial attorney and observe different approaches to witness examinations. I especially appreciated Scott’s approach to direct examination because it was well organized and allowed the witness to tell the story naturally. The seminar reinforced my desire to continue developing my cross-examination skills, particularly when working with evasive or non-responsive witnesses.
Scott made the session both educational and entertaining by using clips from My Cousin Vinny to illustrate effective and ineffective examination techniques.
I also worked on a plaintiff-side matter for Jessica Kerbel, where I reviewed the defendant’s discovery responses and drafted a deficiency letter addressing improper objections and incomplete responses. The goal was to resolve the issues without filing a Motion to Compel, giving me a firsthand look at how effective litigation often involves finding practical solutions that save clients both time and expense.
Another exciting milestone this week was receiving our mock trial assignments. My partner, Dylan, and I will represent the plaintiff in a wrongful death case. I’m looking forward to applying everything I’ve learned throughout the summer while strengthening my advocacy skills during my first mock trial.
To close out the week, I participated in a mock trial training session with Kat Becerra, Nick Aguirre, Scott Sarason and Mike Holt. I presented my direct examination and received thoughtful feedback that I immediately incorporated into my preparation. Learning from attorneys who generously invest their time and share their experience has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this internship.
As the mock trial approaches, I’m excited to put everything I’ve learned into practice. Looking back on the summer, I’m especially grateful for the mentorship, hands-on experience and encouragement I’ve received at RumbergerKirk, and I’m eager to continue learning as we head into the final week of the program.
