As my time as a summer associate came to a close, the Mock Trial was the perfect culmination of everything I had learned throughout the program. Dylan and I spent the weekend making our final preparations, refining our arguments and practicing every stage of the trial. Because it was my first mock trial, I was naturally nervous, but I was equally excited for the chance to put everything I had learned into practice.
On Monday morning, we arrived at the Orange County Courthouse and stepped into an impressive courtroom that immediately made the experience feel real. Once the trial began, my nerves quickly disappeared. I had the opportunity to argue the plaintiff’s Motion in Limine, deliver the opening statement, conduct both direct and cross-examinations, make and respond to objections, and present a motion for directed verdict. Each stage of the trial challenged me in a different way and reinforced the importance of preparation, adaptability and teamwork.
Throughout the trial, I was able to apply the feedback I received from attorneys during workshops and coaching sessions, which gave me greater confidence thinking on my feet in the courtroom. Dylan was an outstanding partner, and I was proud of the way we worked together to prepare our case.
Afterward, Judge Eric H. DuBois and the volunteer judges shared thoughtful feedback that provided valuable insight into our strengths and opportunities for continued growth. Their willingness to invest their time and experience made the competition one of the most meaningful learning experiences of the summer.
We concluded the day with a celebratory toast at the office before gathering for dinner with the attorneys and summer associates who helped make the program such a success. It was the perfect way to celebrate an unforgettable summer.
Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful to have spent my summer at a firm that is genuinely invested in the growth and development of its summer associates. From hands-on assignments and mentorship to seminars, workshops and the Mock Trial, every experience challenged me to become a stronger advocate and a more confident future attorney. I’m leaving the program with lasting relationships, invaluable experience and an even greater excitement for the legal career ahead.
