As my summer at RumbergerKirk comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on what an incredible experience it has been. From getting to know everyone in the Orlando office to working on challenging assignments and learning from talented attorneys, these past 10 weeks have been both rewarding and memorable.
The perfect way to conclude the program was participating in the mock trial. After weeks of preparation with my partner, Blake Garcia from the Miami office, we finally had the opportunity to present our case before Judge Eric H. DuBois. Trying a case in a real courtroom was an unforgettable experience, and Judge DuBois’ thoughtful feedback gave me valuable insight that will continue to shape my development as an advocate.
I also enjoyed watching another team present the same case from a different perspective. Comparing our trial strategies reinforced that there are many effective approaches to advocacy and highlighted the importance of preparation, adaptability and collaboration.
This week also brought the results of our Daubert motion writing competition. While I was pleased with my performance, I appreciated the constructive feedback even more because it provided practical guidance that will strengthen my legal writing moving forward. On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to present during the attorney luncheon, where I discussed recent Florida District Courts of Appeal decisions involving attorney’s fees. It was a rewarding way to contribute one final time before the program concluded.
As I said my goodbyes at Friday’s happy hour, I couldn’t help but reflect on everything this summer has given me. I’m grateful to the associates and partners who invested in my growth as a writer and advocate, the workshops and seminars that strengthened my practical skills, and the opportunity to attend hearings, mediations and other proceedings that brought the practice of law to life. More than anything, this experience confirmed that litigation is the career path I hope to pursue, and I’m excited to carry these lessons with me into my final year of law school and beyond.
